Via Casino Arch Project Update
The restoration of the Via Casino Arch is moving along quite well. Public Works crews installed conduit for lighting that is to be installed throughout the arch. This required getting into some very tight spaces, which made it a tricky task. Electrical wiring and junction boxes will then be installed to provide power to the light fixtures. Crews also installed additional traffic signs, and even some Christmas decorations to give the project a holiday touch. Everything is on pace to have the restoration completed by the holidays. We will continue to provide updates on this project as it moves along.
Cemetery Work
Crews spent time working on various projects at & near the cemetery. A camera was installed in the new upper cemetery for security purposes, and to also hopefully deter dog owners from using the cemetery as a restroom for their pets. The area that surrounds the saltwater reservoir above the cemetery is often used for illegal dumping. Even though CICo technically owns this property, we agreed to team up with CICo to clean the area up since we do store some items at that location. Crews cleared & properly disposed of numerous items that were illegally dumped there. We also organized some if the items we have stored. Finally, an ash burial service had to be setup for the great Paul Moritz, which was very well attended. Future cemetery projects will include replacing the roof on the mortuary building, and installing a decorative fence in front of the upper cemetery.
Pumpout Equipment Installation
Harbor Maintenance crews continued to work on the new pumpout float, which is currently stored at the boatyard. This week they worked on laying out/installing the new sewage pump & water stanchion equipment. The plumbing & electrical was laid out as well, which Jon Gilbert assisted with. Many of the materials were then ordered, and will be installed as the project moves along. Progress of this project will be provided in future updates.
Warehouse Flooring
Every now & then crews must take the time to perform maintenance to our own building. The flooring for one of the mezzanine areas in our Public Works warehouse was rotting creating a potentially unsafe work environment. The old wood floor base was removed, and replaced with new plywood. The area will now be safe for our crews to walk on. Issues such as this reminds us how old our Public Works warehouse really is, and how desperately it needs to be replaced. We are currently working on securing a new warehouse structure, planning the demo of the old building, and finding a temporary home for our department while a new warehouse is being built.
